Multilingual Library & Multicultural Center

About the space

This is our new, and hopefully permanent, home! A vibrant and diverse area of Kypseli, we opened Athens’ first multilingual library. With an ever growing collection of over 14,000 books in over 25 languages, a children’s library, a beautiful little garden and a friendly atmosphere we aim to make our library the place where neighbours, locals, migrants, refugees, visitors, children, students, pensioners come to read, have a conversation, work or participate in the various language lessons, artistic workshops and cultural activities we organise.

Schisto refugee camp

LIBRARY

Based in the Schisto Refugee Camp that hosts approximately 600 Afghan refugees in containers, we turned one of the containers in a library itself. It contains over 300 Farsi books and 400 books in Greek and English, including children’s and teen’s books and textbooks, encyclopedias, language learning materials and Greek culture books. This library was built thanks to a crowdfunding campaign and book donations from Greek publishers and individuals. Since it was set up, it has been managed internally.

Catholic Relief Services

LIBRARY

Based in a Catholic Relief Services shelter in Athens, hosting approximately 20 single families and accessible by over 50 families in nearby CRS shelters, we created a library that contains 320 books in Farsi, Pashto and Arabic and over 600 books in Greek and English. The library is designed to cater for everyone, regardless of their level of education, interests or tastes. It offers children’s books, classic literature, teen literature, history, cooking, art, literacy, educational, comic books, science fiction, dictionaries and encyclopedias. The library is managed by Caritas Athens.

Book & Play

LIBRARY

From October 2018 to May 2019 We Need Books participated in the Municipality of Athens’ pilot programme Polis 2. During this time we operated a multilingual library in Plateia Theatrou, one of the city’s most run down areas. It was entirely run by volunteers and through the various cultural events it organised it brought together people of all backgrounds. It offered a collection of over 3,500 books in over 14 languages for children and adults, creative workshops for children ages 2 – 17 and language lessons in Greek, English and German.

Antigone

Project

We collaborated with Antigone, an organization focused on female refugees issues in Northern Greece. We provided over 20 books in Farsi and Arabic on women’s health, literacy, etc.

Melissa

Project

We also collaborated with Melissa, an organization focused on women and children refugees’ issues in Athens. We provided over 50 books in Farsi, Arabic, Greek and English of several topics and levels.

Conferences

Project

As part of the conference on Library Services to Refugees & Immigrants, held at Goethe Institute in Athens, we participated in the workshop topic of library fundraising. This was one part of four fifteen-person workshop groups. Attendees of the workshops comprised of municipality officers, librarians, teachers, and other interested persons.

Melissa

Project

We are working with the majority of the publishing houses in Greece for donations of children’s books. So far we have received a significant amount of English and French children’s books, that the publishing houses use for translation purposes to the greek language. This has zero cost for them. So far we have collected more than 350 English and Greek books.
